Next week is September, and I can hardly believe it! But that means it’s time for cooler weather and my first ever capsule wardrobe. GUYS, I’m so excited to try this out. I’ve put together a set of 34 pieces, all versatile and perfect for layering all season. To be honest, it took me quite a while to put this together. I’ve never done a capsule wardrobe before and I really had a hard time narrowing down my closet to under 40 pieces. Well, really I just had a hard time with the last few pieces – deciding which ones are best for layering, etc.
Now that my closet is a fraction of the size it used to be, it feels so clean and refreshing when I walk into it. And knowing that I can wear anything in front of me makes my life so much easier – they are all my favorite pieces.
Why a Capsule Wardrobe?
I’m starting a capsule wardrobe with the intentions of simplifying my life and making my morning routines easier. If I spend less time focusing on what to wear, I can spend more time focusing on what’s really important. Read more about why I’ve made this decision here.
I’ve done a lot of research on capsule wardrobes before I got started. I knew I wanted to create a collection that was made of very neutral casual pieces with the intention of layering. Since I work from home, I am able to have a more casual collection without any worries of “work appropriate.”
You’ll notice that there are three main colors in my wardrobe: black, olive, and blue. I did this unintentionally – I’ve just always had a closet primarily made up of these colors. I’ve never been a very bright dresser – I tend to stick to lots of blacks and denims. It’s just more me.
I broke my capsule wardrobes down into the 4 seasons: March-May, June-August, September-November, and December-February. Since I live in Georgia, I think these months will work best together. (We’ll see if I’m right a few months from now.) So this fall wardrobe will begin September 1st and go through the end of November.
I had the majority of these pieces already – so I didn’t need to buy much. I did manage to purchase a few new items including these booties and this coat. I knew these pieces would be versatile and perfect for mixing and matching.
The rules are very simple and straight-forward.
I have a capsule wardrobe built of 34 pieces (not including accessories) and I will wear only these items for the next three months. I was able to choose a few items from my summer wardrobe to roll-over (like sandals) and purchase a few items new.
During the duration of the capsule wardrobe (Sept-Nov), I am not allowed to make any new purchases. This should prevent those impluse buys that I’ve made in the past that aren’t exactly good purchases. Towards the end of the fall capsule, I can begin planning the next season’s wardrobe. At that time period, I can make any necessary purchases I may need for the winter season.
Most of all, have fun with it!
